2 Worcester men among trio arrested in Marlboro scam MARLBORO A trio of men were arrested Wednesday afternoon after police say they tried to buy prepaid debit cards from Ocean State Job Lot with a fraudulent credit card. Wednesday, while Owusu Yeboah, 23, and another person waited in a car in the parking lot. Gyebi and Smith initially bought two birthday cards valued at $6.75 with the fraudulent card before trying to buy two $300 and one $400 prepaid debit cards with the fake credit card, said DeCiero. Ocean State Job Lot officials recently warned store employees about the scam. The clerk became suspicious and the two men left the store and fled in a silver car, said DeCiero. An employee provided police with a description of the vehicle and its license plate number. Officers stopped the car on Hosmer Street, a short distance away from the Ocean State Job Lot. Police found a large amount of gift cards, prepaid debit cards and cash inside the vehicle, said DeCiero. The credit card company confirmed the card Gyebi and Smith used to try to buy the prepaid debit cards was fraudulent, said DeCiero. While searching Gyebi wallet, police found two counterfeit $100 bills, said DeCiero. Officers also found a $2,612.07 check that Yeboah had given to the other passenger in the car. The bank also confirmed that check was counterfeit, said DeCiero. Gyebi, of 27 Acton St., Worcester, and Smith, of 100 Elm St., Worcester, were each charged with two counts of attempting to commit a crime and one count of larceny under $250 and possession of a counterfeit note. Gyebi was also arrested on warrants charging larceny over $250, shoplifting and receiving stolen property. Yeboah, of 3338 Paulding Ave., Apt. 12, Bronx, New York, was charged with two counts of attempting to commit a crime and one count each of larceny under $250, conspiracy and possession of a counterfeit note.
